Is Bleeding Heart Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Dicentra, Lamprocapnos, Dutchman’s Trousers · Lamprocapnos spectabilis (Dicentra spectabilis)
What makes it toxic
Isoquinoline alkaloids such as protopine, present throughout the plant and concentrated in the rootstock, which irritate the GI tract and can trigger tremors and seizures.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhea, drooling and weakness within hours; heavy ingestion can bring muscle tremors, wobbliness and seizures.
What to do if your dog eats it
Remove access and call your vet with an estimate of what was eaten. Root chewing, tremors or seizures mean an immediate clinic visit.
Common questions
My dog dug up the bleeding heart roots — what do I do?
Treat it as urgent. Roots hold the highest alkaloid load, so call a vet or poison hotline right away, even before symptoms show.
Are the pretty flowers safe to sniff from the border?
Yes — sniffing and brushing past are harmless. Only chewing or eating the plant causes exposure.
