Is Blue Cohosh Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Caulophyllum thalictroides, Blueberry Root, Papoose Root · Caulophyllum thalictroides
What makes it toxic
Caulosaponin saponins and N-methylcytisine, a nicotine-like alkaloid found in the roots and seeds. The combination irritates the gut and can stimulate the cardiovascular system.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. Notable amounts may also produce agitation, tremors, rapid breathing and a fast or irregular heartbeat.
What to do if your dog eats it
Take the plant material away, let the dog drink water and monitor. Contact your vet promptly if symptoms include tremors, agitation or heart-rate changes, not just vomiting.
Common questions
How much blue cohosh hurts a dog?
A nibble of leaf usually causes little more than mild stomach upset, but seeds or root material are more concentrated and deserve a call to the vet even if symptoms seem mild at first.
Can blue cohosh supplements poison a dog?
Yes. Concentrated root extracts contain far more alkaloid than a nibble of the garden plant, so pills and tinctures must be kept out of reach.
