Is Chrysanthemum Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Mums, Garden Mums, Daisy Mum · Chrysanthemum morifolium
What makes it toxic
Pyrethrins in the flowers and sesquiterpene lactones in foliage and sap, which irritate the GI tract and skin.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and mild lethargy within hours; skin contact can cause redness and itching.
What to do if your dog eats it
Remove access, offer water and monitor. Contact your vet if GI signs last more than 24 hours or the dog becomes unsteady on its feet.
Common questions
Is pyrethrin in mums the same as flea-product pyrethrin?
It is the plant-derived source of it. Concentrated pet products are a separate hazard; the mum itself delivers only small amounts that mainly upset the stomach.
My dog rolls in the mum bed constantly — is that dangerous?
Rolling usually causes nothing worse than itching. Only chewing or eating the plant delivers enough pyrethrins to matter.
