Is Columbine Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Aquilegia, Granny’s Bonnet · Aquilegia vulgaris
What makes it toxic
Cyanogenic glycosides and GI irritants throughout the plant, concentrated in seeds and roots, which upset the gut and in quantity can affect the nervous system.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and mild tiredness within hours of ingestion.
What to do if your dog eats it
Remove access, offer water and monitor. Contact your vet if signs persist past a day or the dog ate seeds in quantity.
Common questions
Can cyanogenic compounds in columbine cause serious poisoning?
Only in significant quantity, and dogs rarely eat that much of a bitter plant. Realistic exposure produces self-limiting GI upset, but call the vet if wobbliness appears.
Should I deadhead columbines to protect my dog?
Deadheading removes the most concentrated part (seeds) and keeps self-seeding under control, so it is a reasonable precaution for a grazing dog.
