Is Eucalyptus Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Silver Dollar Tree, Gum Tree, Blue Gum · Eucalyptus cinerea
What makes it toxic
Eucalyptol and other terpenes in the foliage and oil. Dogs tolerate small doses better than cats, but concentrated products can cause neurologic and GI effects.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy after eating leaves. Oil ingestion adds depression, wobbliness and possibly tremors.
What to do if your dog eats it
Take plant material away, offer water and monitor. Call your vet after any oil exposure or if the dog becomes weak, trembles or keeps vomiting.
Common questions
Are eucalyptus trees in the yard a danger?
Dogs rarely eat enough fallen leaves to get sick. The realistic risks are chewing cut branches and concentrated oils or sprays.
Can I use eucalyptus spray around my dog?
Avoid it. Aerosolized oil irritates lungs and can be absorbed; choose pet-safe alternatives and never apply diluted or neat oil to the dog.
