Is Jerusalem Cherry Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Winter Cherry, Christmas Cherry, Madeira Winter Cherry · Solanum pseudocapsicum
What makes it toxic
Solanocapsine and related glycoalkaloids in berries, leaves and stems. They irritate the GI tract and affect cardiac and nervous function at higher doses.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhea, drooling and abdominal pain first, then lethargy, weakness, dilated pupils, bradycardia or tremors with larger berry meals.
What to do if your dog eats it
Remove the berries, estimate the amount eaten and call your vet the same day. Weakness, tremors or a very slow pulse is an immediate ER situation.
Common questions
My dog ate berries off the potted plant — how urgent?
Same-day vet call, especially for a small dog. Berry quantity drives severity, and early decontamination helps a lot.
Why do stores sell it at Christmas if it is toxic?
The fruiting plant is decorative, and human toxicity is lower. It remains a known pet poisoning plant — display it where pets cannot browse.
Is it related to tomatoes or peppers?
Yes, all are nightshades. Jerusalem cherry simply concentrates solanine-type alkaloids in fruit instead of edible flesh.
