Marjoram is mildly toxic to dogs. Eating the herb causes vomiting and diarrhea from its essential oils; the dried spice is equally capable of this.

Also known as: Sweet Marjoram, Knotted Marjoram, Origanum majorana · Origanum majorana

What makes it toxic

Carvacrol and terpinene essential oils that irritate the stomach and intestinal lining in quantity.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and mild abdominal discomfort within hours of eating leaves or seasoning.

What to do if your dog eats it

Offer water, remove access and monitor. Contact your vet if GI signs persist beyond a day.

Common questions

Can I season homemade dog food with marjoram?

Best to skip it. Small amounts probably cause nothing, but dogs gain nothing from it and concentrated spice adds GI risk for no benefit.

My dog ate a pizza crust with marjoram seasoning — is that bad?

The herb is a mild concern; onion and garlic in the toppings or sauce are the real danger. Call your vet if those were present.
