Is Nightshade (Deadly) Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Belladonna, Deadly Nightshade · Atropa belladonna
What makes it toxic
Atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine, anticholinergic alkaloids concentrated in berries and roots, which paralyze normal nerve and heart function.
Warning signs to watch for
Dilated pupils, dry sticky mouth, tachycardia, vomiting, staggering, agitation or extreme drowsiness, tremors and seizures within about an hour.
What to do if your dog eats it
Immediate emergency vet visit with a sample of the plant. Tell the vet the time of ingestion; anticholinergic poisoning has a narrow treatment window.
Common questions
Why would a dog eat deadly nightshade berries?
The ripe berries taste sweet, unlike many bitter toxic plants. That makes belladonna especially dangerous to foraging dogs and puppies.
How fast does belladonna poisoning show?
Usually within one hour, starting with dilated pupils and a racing heart. Any delay in treatment worsens the prognosis significantly.
