Also known as: Umbrella Tree, Schefflera, Amate, Schefflera actinophylla · Schefflera actinophylla

What makes it toxic

Calcium oxalate crystals plus saponins in the leaves and stems, released when the plant tissue is crushed.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, lip smacking, pawing at the mouth, mild vomiting and reduced appetite within hours.

What to do if your dog eats it

Rinse the dog’s mouth, clear away leaves and provide water. Contact your vet only if signs persist past a few hours or the dog cannot eat or drink comfortably.

Common questions

How much leaf does it take to cause a reaction?

A few chewed leaves are enough to burn the mouth — the dose is not the issue with oxalate plants, the mechanical injury is.

Is the umbrella tree safe to keep with a puppy?

Puppies chew everything, so either elevate the plant or pick a verified non-toxic species until the teething stage passes.

Are the berries also a problem?

The red flower spikes and berries are best kept away from pets too, though leaves are what dogs typically chew.
