Also known as: Wild Marjoram, Pizza Herb, Origanum vulgare · Origanum vulgare

What makes it toxic

Carvacrol and thymol essential oils that irritate the stomach and intestines in quantity.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and mild abdominal discomfort within hours of eating the herb.

What to do if your dog eats it

Offer water, remove access and monitor. Contact your vet if GI signs persist beyond a day.

Common questions

My dog got into the spice rack and ate dried oregano — now what?

Expect stomach upset and offer water. A large amount of any dried herb is irritating; call your vet if vomiting is repeated.

Is oregano safe in tiny amounts in dog food recipes?

A pinch is generally tolerated, but there is no benefit worth the irritation risk. Safer herbs like basil exist if you want green seasoning.
