Plumeria is only mildly toxic to dogs. The milky sap irritates the mouth and skin, and chewing any part may cause drooling and mild vomiting.

Also known as: Frangipani, Temple Tree, Lei Flower, Plumeria rubra · Plumeria rubra

What makes it toxic

Irritant latex and triterpenoids in the white sap of stems and leaves. They inflame mucous membranes on contact but do not poison the heart or organs.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, lip licking, mild vomiting or diarrhea within hours, plus reddened skin or muzzle irritation where sap touched.

What to do if your dog eats it

Rinse the mouth, wash sap from the coat and provide water. Monitor; a vet visit is only warranted for persistent vomiting or eye exposure.

Common questions

My dog chewed a pruned plumeria branch — serious?

No — expect drooling and maybe a vomit from the latex. Rinse the mouth and watch; fresh-cut stems carry the most sap.

Does plumeria sap hurt paws after lying under the tree?

Fallen leaves and flowers carry little sap, so paw irritation is uncommon. Rinse paws if redness appears and stop licking with a cone briefly.
