Is Spider Lily Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Red Spider Lily, Hurricane Lily, Higanbana · Lycoris radiata
What makes it toxic
Lycorine and related alkaloids throughout the plant, heaviest in the bulb. Lycorine is a powerful emetic and, in quantity, depresses blood pressure and the nervous system.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and belly pain within hours of chewing. Bulb-eating dogs can develop tremors, wobbliness and collapse.
What to do if your dog eats it
Clear the mouth and call your vet promptly, urgently if a bulb was swallowed. Any tremors or collapse means go straight to the animal hospital.
Common questions
How dangerous is one dug-up bulb?
Serious. Bulbs concentrate the alkaloids, and dogs that dig up bulbs often swallow chunks — call the vet before symptoms appear.
Do dogs get the severe signs more than cats?
Both species react to lycorine with heavy vomiting. Cats tend to eat less, but neither species is safe — keep the bulbs out of reach of both.
Are the fall-blooming surprise lilies related?
Yes — surprise lily and naked lady are Lycoris species with the same toxins, so the same rules apply.
