What makes it toxic

Saponins throughout the plant that irritate the stomach and intestines when a meaningful amount is eaten.

Warning signs to watch for

Vomiting, diarrhea, drooling and mild abdominal discomfort within hours of chewing leaves or stems.

What to do if your dog eats it

Take the plant material away, offer water and watch. Contact your vet if vomiting persists beyond a day or the dog seems increasingly dull.

Common questions

Some dog supplements contain yucca — why is that okay?

Supplements use processed, dose-controlled yucca extract, which is different from a dog eating raw leaves. Do not confuse the two.

Beyond the mild toxicity, the sharp tips can injure the mouth. Block access with a low fence or move the plant, and offer a chew alternative.
