Is Aloe Vera Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Aloe, Medicinal Aloe, Aloe barbadensis miller · Aloe barbadensis miller
What makes it toxic
Saponins and anthraquinone glycosides concentrated in the latex, the yellowish layer between the skin and the clear gel. They act as gut irritants and stimulant laxatives.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite and sometimes tremors or a change in urine color within several hours of chewing a leaf.
What to do if your cat eats it
Remove access to the plant, offer water and monitor closely. Call your vet if vomiting or diarrhea lasts more than a few hours, or immediately if tremors appear.
Common questions
Is aloe gel itself safe for cats?
Pure commercial aloe gel without latex is less risky, but home-cut leaves carry the latex layer. Do not offer aloe products made for humans by mouth.
Can I use aloe cream on my cat’s skin?
No. Cats groom themselves and will ingest topical products. Ask your vet for a pet-safe alternative.
