Yes — sago palm is severely toxic to cats and among the deadliest houseplants. Every part contains cycasin, with the seeds holding the highest concentration.

Also known as: Cycad, Coontie Palm, Cardboard Palm, Cycas revoluta · Cycas revoluta

What makes it toxic

Cycasin and related BMAA compounds. Cycasin damages the liver and causes widespread cell death; a single seed can be fatal to a small animal.

Warning signs to watch for

Vomiting (often within 15 minutes to a few hours), drooling, diarrhea, bruising, bleeding, jaundice, seizures and liver failure over the following days.

What to do if your cat eats it

Emergency. Go to a vet immediately — do not wait. Early aggressive treatment (induced vomiting, activated charcoal, IV fluids, liver monitoring) is the only real chance of saving severe cases.

Common questions

Is one sago palm seed really lethal?

It can be. Seeds carry the highest cycasin load, and ingestion of a single seed has killed dogs; a cat’s smaller body mass is even more vulnerable.

Are outdoor sago palms a risk too?

Yes — the plant is equally toxic whether grown indoors or in the yard, and fallen seeds on the ground are commonly eaten by pets.
