Yes, black cherry is severely toxic to cats. Wilting leaves, twigs and seeds release cyanide when chewed, which stops the body from using oxygen.

Also known as: Wild Black Cherry, Rum Cherry, Cabinet Cherry · Prunus serotina

What makes it toxic

Cyanogenic glycosides (amygdalin and prunasin) in the leaves, stems and seeds. Crushing, chewing or wilting releases hydrogen cyanide, which blocks cellular respiration — the body is starved of oxygen while still breathing it in.

Warning signs to watch for

Rapid, labored breathing, bright red gums, drooling, vomiting, dilated pupils, weakness, seizures and sudden collapse; progression can occur within an hour.

What to do if your cat eats it

Emergency. Go straight to a vet if leaves — especially wilted fallen ones — twigs or crushed seeds were chewed. Oxygen therapy and antidotes are time-critical, so do not wait to see how it develops.

Common questions

Why are wilted leaves the worst?

Wilting concentrates the cyanogenic glycosides at the tissue level, and damaged fallen leaves release hydrogen cyanide readily. Storm-dropped branches under a black cherry are the classic hazard.

Are the cherries themselves dangerous?

The ripe flesh is the least toxic part, but the pit inside each cherry carries the cyanogenic compounds, and swallowed pits add a choking and obstruction risk for a cat.
