Is Bloodroot Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Red Puccoon, Red Root, Sanguinaria canadensis · Sanguinaria canadensis
What makes it toxic
Sanguinarine and related isoquinoline alkaloids concentrated in the rhizome and the orange-red latex. They damage tissue on contact and irritate the stomach and intestines when swallowed.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and lethargy within a few hours. Skin contact with the sap can cause redness and blistering that the cat spreads by grooming.
What to do if your cat eats it
Rinse the cat’s mouth and any sap off the fur with lukewarm water. Remove plant material and call your vet for guidance, especially if vomiting is repeated or the cat seems depressed.
Common questions
Is bloodroot used in medicine safe around cats?
No. Bloodroot extracts (sanguinarine) are used in some human salve products, but they are caustic. Keep supplements, salves and the raw plant all away from pets.
Which part of bloodroot is most toxic?
The underground rhizome has the highest alkaloid concentration, but leaves, stems and the sap are all irritating. No part of the plant is considered safe.
