Is Buckeye Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Ohio Buckeye, Fetid Buckeye · Aesculus glabra
What makes it toxic
Aesculin and saponins such as aescin, concentrated in the nuts and young shoots. They irritate the digestive tract and in larger doses affect the nervous system.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and depression within hours. Larger ingestions can cause tremors, staggering and dilated pupils.
What to do if your cat eats it
Remove the nut or plant material and offer water. Call your vet the same day for any confirmed ingestion; go to an ER for tremors, staggering or collapse.
Common questions
Is one buckeye nut enough to poison a cat?
One chewed nut can cause significant vomiting and diarrhea in a cat. Because the toxins concentrate in the nut, even a single nut deserves a vet call.
Are buckeye and horse chestnut the same?
They are close relatives in the same genus and contain similar toxins. Treat both as toxic to pets.
