Is Chamomile Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: German Chamomile, Roman Chamomile, Wild Chamomile · Matricaria chamomilla / Chamaemelum nobile
What makes it toxic
Bisabolol, chamazulene, tannins and related volatile oils. In small amounts these cause mild GI irritation; cats can also develop contact dermatitis or, rarely, an allergic reaction.
Warning signs to watch for
Occasional vomiting, diarrhea, drooling or itchy red skin after chewing the flowers or foliage. True systemic toxicity is rare.
What to do if your cat eats it
Remove access, offer water and watch for repeat vomiting. Call your vet if GI signs persist or the skin reaction spreads; treat sudden facial swelling or breathing trouble as an emergency allergy.
Common questions
Can I give my cat chamomile tea to calm her?
No, not without a vet’s guidance. The plant is mild, but brewed teas and supplements are concentrated and can upset cats; many human calming products are unsafe for them.
Is chamomile in the garden worse than in a teabag?
Fresh plants are mild and most cats ignore them. The real exposure risk comes from concentrated products, so keep oils and supplements away.
