Is Coffee Tree Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Coffee Plant, Arabian Coffee, Coffea arabica · Coffea arabica
What makes it toxic
Caffeine in foliage, beans and flowers — a stimulant cats metabolize very slowly — plus saponins that inflame the digestive tract. There is no part of the plant that is safe to chew.
Warning signs to watch for
Restlessness and rapid breathing, vomiting, elevated heart rate, tremors and, in larger ingestions, arrhythmia or seizures. Beans are the most concentrated source.
What to do if your cat eats it
Remove plant material, offer water and call your vet — for any amount beyond a leaf-snack, or immediately if the heart is racing, the cat is trembling, or beans were eaten. Caffeine poisoning has no antidote, so speed matters.
Common questions
How much coffee plant is dangerous for a cat?
A leaf or two may only cause mild restlessness, but beans carry a serious caffeine load and even a few can affect a cat’s heart. Any bean ingestion should go to the vet.
Can my cat get caffeine from licking my coffee cup instead?
Yes — spilled coffee, grounds and tea are all real caffeine risks. The plant is only one vector; keep all caffeinated items away from cats.
Is the dwarf coffee tree sold for terrariums the same plant?
Yes — Coffea arabica in miniature is the same species with the same caffeine and saponins. Terrarium placement does not make it cat-safe.
