Is Coral Cactus Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Euphorbia lactea Crest, Crested Euphorbia, Elkhorn, Milkstripe Euphorbia · Euphorbia lactea f. cristata
What makes it toxic
Diterpene ester-rich milky latex (euphorbol and related compounds) in every part. The sap is caustic to mucous membranes, eyes and skin on contact.
Warning signs to watch for
Intense burning of the mouth, profuse drooling, vomiting, pawing at the face and swollen lips within minutes; eye exposure causes severe pain and redness.
What to do if your cat eats it
Rinse the mouth and any sap-exposed skin or eyes with clean water for several minutes. Call your vet promptly — eye involvement or persistent vomiting deserves an immediate visit.
Common questions
Is coral cactus worse than a true cactus for cats?
Yes. True cacti mainly prick; Euphorbia sap is chemically caustic and can blister. The wavy crest makes it look harmless, but the latex is genuinely nasty.
My cat broke a piece and sap got on her paw — what now?
Rinse the paw thoroughly before she grooms it, then check her mouth. Any drooling or facial rubbing after grooming means a vet call.
