Yes — coral plant is severely toxic to cats. Its seeds contain a ricin-like toxalbumin and a violent purgative oil, and every other part is an irritant.

Also known as: Guatemala Rhubarb, Jatropha multifida · Jatropha multifida

What makes it toxic

Curcin, a ribosome-inhibiting toxalbumin concentrated in the seeds, plus jatrophone and a strong purgative oil throughout the plant. Seeds can cause severe GI collapse; sap and foliage are caustic irritants.

Warning signs to watch for

Rapid drooling and vomiting, severe (often bloody) diarrhea, abdominal pain and dehydration within hours, then weakness, lethargy and possible organ stress.

What to do if your cat eats it

Emergency. Go to a veterinary ER immediately with seed or plant material. Fluid therapy and GI protection started early are what carry small animals through — do not wait for dehydration to develop.

Common questions

Are the coral-red flowers or the seeds more dangerous?

The seeds — like its relative the physic nut, Jatropha seeds are among the most toxic plant materials commonly encountered in tropical gardens.

Is coral plant sap dangerous to skin?

Yes — the milky latex irritates skin and eyes, and a cat grooming it off gets a dose internally. Rinse fur and wear gloves when pruning.
