Yes, the Joshua tree is toxic to cats. Like all yuccas, it contains saponins that cause vomiting, drooling and depression when chewed.

Also known as: Yucca, Tree Yucca, Yucca Brevifolia · Yucca brevifolia

What makes it toxic

Steroidal saponins in leaves, bark and seeds. They inflame the GI tract, and houseplant-sized yucca relatives show the same effect at small scale.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy within hours. Significant intake can produce weakness and dilated pupils.

What to do if your cat eats it

Remove access, offer water and call your vet if vomiting recurs. The spiny leaf tips also cause physical injuries — check the mouth for punctures.

Common questions

Is a Joshua tree houseplant a real risk?

Young specimens are grown as houseplants and carry the same yucca saponins. Size does not reduce toxicity per bite.

Is the spiky foliage a hazard beyond poison?

Yes — the rigid tips can scratch eyes and mouths. Keep indoor cats and yucca plants apart for both reasons.

Are yucca-containing pet foods a problem?

No — purified yucca extract in feed is a different, controlled form. Chewing the raw plant is the hazard.
