Is Kentucky Coffee Tree Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: American Coffee Berry, Coffeenut, Gymnocladus dioicus · Gymnocladus dioicus
What makes it toxic
Cytisine, a nicotine-like alkaloid concentrated in the large seeds and the greenish pulp of the pods. People roast the seeds as a coffee substitute, but raw seeds and pulp are hazardous to pets.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, drooling, lethargy and loss of appetite within hours, followed by rapid or labored breathing, muscle twitching, tremors and seizures as the alkaloid takes hold.
What to do if your cat eats it
Call a vet immediately if seeds or pod pulp were eaten. Early professional decontamination and supportive care can prevent escalation — do not wait for tremors to appear.
Common questions
Are the seeds dangerous before they ripen?
Yes — the fresh seeds and green pulp are the most toxic stage. Fallen pods under an ornamental or street tree are the main way pets meet them.
Is the danger only in the seeds?
The seeds and pod pulp carry the cytisine load; leaves are considered less dangerous but are not recommended chewing material for pets either.
