Is Lantana Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Shrub Verbena, Yellow Sage, Lantana camara · Lantana camara
What makes it toxic
Pentacyclic triterpenoids, chiefly lantadene A and B, concentrated in the leaves and unripe green berries. These compounds injure liver cells and damage the gut lining; the ripe berries are generally the least toxic part.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy and weakness within hours. Larger ingestions can progress to jaundice, increased thirst, photosensitivity of light-colored skin and acute liver failure.
What to do if your cat eats it
Remove any remaining plant material and call your vet the same day, even if signs seem mild. If your cat ate green berries or shows jaundice, weakness or no appetite, treat it as an emergency.
Common questions
Can a cat die from eating lantana?
It is possible. Severe lantana poisoning causes liver failure, which can be fatal without treatment. Veterinary care started early gives the best outcome.
Are lantana berries the most dangerous part?
Unripe green berries are highly toxic, while fully ripe dark berries are milder. Since you cannot always judge ripeness, treat any berry eaten as a poisoning risk.
Is lantana safe to grow outside if my cat stays indoors?
Generally yes for indoor-only cats, but leaves blown into the yard or outdoor escapes are worth considering. Many owners pick a non-toxic alternative for peace of mind.
