Licorice plant is at most mildly toxic to cats. Chewing it can cause mild stomach upset, and large or repeated amounts can affect potassium balance.

Also known as: Licorice Root, Sweetwood, Glycyrrhiza glabra · Glycyrrhiza glabra

What makes it toxic

Glycyrrhizin, a sweet saponin-like compound that irritates the gut in quantity and, with significant repeated intake, can cause sodium retention and potassium loss.

Warning signs to watch for

Mild vomiting, diarrhea and drooling after chewing leaves or roots. Chronic intake could add weakness from electrolyte changes.

What to do if your cat eats it

Remove plant material, offer water and monitor. Call your vet if vomiting persists or if the cat has repeatedly eaten the plant.

Common questions

Is the garden annual also called licorice plant the same thing?

No — the silvery trailing Helichrysum petiolare sold as licorice plant is a different species. Its aromatic foliage is also best treated as mildly irritating, so keep cats from chewing either one.

Is licorice candy dangerous if my cat licks it?

Sugar and additives are the real issue there. A lick is not a toxicity emergency, but cats should not eat candy of any kind.
