Plumeria is only mildly toxic to cats. Its milky sap irritates the mouth and skin, and chewing leaves or flowers causes drooling and an upset stomach.

Also known as: Frangipani, Temple Tree, Lei Flower, Plumeria rubra · Plumeria rubra

What makes it toxic

Irritant latex and triterpenoid compounds in the milky sap, present in all parts but most concentrated in broken stems. Effects are local irritation rather than systemic poisoning.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, mild vomiting, oral soreness after chewing; reddened skin or eye irritation from sap contact. Signs are self-limiting within hours.

What to do if your cat eats it

Rinse the mouth, wipe sap off fur with a damp cloth and offer water. Call the vet only if vomiting persists or sap got into the eyes.

Common questions

Are plumeria flowers used in leis dangerous if a cat bats them down?

Falling flowers carry little sap and cause mild irritation at most. The bigger concern is a cat chewing a cut stem and getting latex in the mouth.

Why is plumeria related to oleander but so much milder?

Both are apocynids, but plumeria lacks oleander’s cardiac glycosides. Its sap is an irritant, not a heart poison — still worth keeping out of reach.
