Is Satin Pothos Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Silver Pothos, Silver Philodendron, Silk Pothos, Scindapsus pictus · Scindapsus pictus
What makes it toxic
Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals throughout the plant. Chewing releases needle-like raphides that pierce the tongue, gums and throat, causing immediate pain and swelling.
Warning signs to watch for
Instant burning in the mouth, violent drooling, pawing at the face, refusal to eat, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. Signs start within minutes of chewing.
What to do if your cat eats it
Rinse the mouth with water, wipe any sap from the lips, and offer milk or water to ease the irritation. Call your vet if drooling and vomiting last beyond an hour or if breathing looks strained.
Common questions
Is satin pothos safer than regular pothos?
No — they are different plants (Scindapsus pictus vs Epipremnum aureum) but carry the same calcium oxalate punch. Treat them identically: painful, rarely lethal, always worth preventing.
Can a cat die from chewing satin pothos?
Deaths are very rare. The danger window is severe airway swelling or dehydration from prolonged vomiting, both uncommon. It is a pain emergency more often than a life emergency — but a vet should assess any reaction.
Are the silver spots the toxic part?
The whole plant is toxic, not just the variegated tissue — leaves, stems and roots all contain the crystals.
