Is Schefflera Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Umbrella Tree, Umbrella Plant, Octopus Tree · Schefflera actinophylla
What makes it toxic
Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals in the leaf and stem tissue. When chewed, the needle-like crystals pierce the soft tissue of the mouth and throat, causing immediate pain and irritation.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, pawing at the mouth, oral redness, vomiting and reluctance to eat, starting within minutes of chewing. Signs usually fade within a day.
What to do if your cat eats it
Rinse the mouth with water, remove any plant material and offer milk or water to flush the crystals. Call your vet if drooling and vomiting persist beyond a few hours.
Common questions
Are dwarf umbrella trees just as toxic?
Yes — Schefflera arboricola (the dwarf form) and Schefflera actinophylla (the large umbrella tree) both contain calcium oxalate crystals.
Can schefflera kill a cat?
No deaths are documented. The reaction is painful and dramatic but self-limiting; the main risk is dehydration if vomiting continues.
