The umbrella plant (Schefflera) is mildly toxic to cats. Chewing the leaves releases calcium oxalate crystals that burn the mouth, causing drooling and vomiting.

Also known as: Dwarf Umbrella Tree, Umbrella Tree, Schefflera, Heptapleurum arboricola, Schefflera arboricola · Schefflera arboricola

What makes it toxic

Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals plus saponins in leaves and stems. The needle-like crystals pierce mouth tissue on chewing; saponins add gut irritation.

Warning signs to watch for

Burning of lips and tongue, heavy drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting and sometimes difficulty swallowing, starting within minutes.

What to do if your cat eats it

Rinse the mouth with water, remove plant material and offer water or a little milk. Call your vet if drooling and vomiting persist beyond an hour or breathing looks affected.

Common questions

Is the umbrella plant the same as umbrella palm?

No — umbrella plant usually means Schefflera, which is mildly toxic. Umbrella palm (Cyperus alternifolius) is generally considered non-toxic, so check which one you own.

Can a Schefflera kill a cat?

Deaths are not documented. It is a painful irritant plant, not a systemic poison, but severe mouth swelling or prolonged vomiting still needs a vet.
